Introduction to Surdas

Surdas is believed to have been born in 1478. One theory places his birthplace in Runkata or Renuka near Mathura, while another theory places his birthplace at Sihi near Delhi.

Surdas, a disciple of Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya is the most famous of the Ashtachhap poets. He lived at Gaughat, between Mathura and Vrindavan, and performed bhajans and kirtans at the Shrinathji temple. He died in Parasoli in 1583.

Of his three works: Sursagar, Sahitya Lahari, and Sur Saravali, Sursagar is the most popular. Sur’s poetry provides a vivid picture of the everyday, intimate details of Indian society, centered on agriculture and animal husbandry, and a depiction of human instincts. (Sur is considered the greatest poet of affection and romance. The love between Krishna and the gopis establishes natural human love. Through the glorious tale of human love, Sur liberated ordinary people from inferiority complex and instilled in them a desire to live.

His poetry reflects the refined form of Braj Bhasha. It is a fine link in the tradition of ongoing folk songs.

Two streams of Krishna’s pastimes flow in Sur Sagar—one describes Krishna’s astonishing acts of destruction, and the other expresses Krishna’s pure, blissful form. This encompasses all of Krishna’s pastimes, which can be called pleasure-plays, and which, in fact, constitute the exquisite emotional wealth of Sur Sagar. The emotional development of these Krishna’s pastimes occurs in three directions: on the one hand, they awaken feelings of compassion for Krishna in the hearts of Yashoda, Nanda, and other adult men and women of Braj. On the one hand, there is growth and development, on the other hand, love for Krishna arises in the hearts of his friends, and on the other hand, sweet or Kanta love arises and gradually develops in the hearts of the young girls, teenagers, and newly married Gopis of Braj. Surdas demonstrates his poetic talent by creating numerous original themes and depicting the myriad emotions that arise in the human mind in a symbolic way, depicting both the joy of union and the intense sorrow of separation. If the classical definition of an epic is not considered, this poem by Surdas can be called an epic. The unique feature of this poem is that, despite its distinct personalities, the various narratives are integral parts of the entire poem and are interdependent on each other. Another characteristic is that, being composed in the lyric style, the seemingly contradictory elements of the poem and the composition are integrated and unified.

Key facts about his life:
Birth: Surdas was born around 1478 AD. He was born in Varanasi or Agra.
Physical Condition: Surdas is said to have been blind, but there is no definitive confirmation of his vision due to his visual impairment.
Devotion: He described the childhood pranks of Lord Krishna in his poems, which became very popular.
Literary Contribution: Surdas’s works are primarily collected in Sursagar, Sursaptak, and Sursindhu. His poems are highly renowned in Hindi devotional literature.
Famous Poem: He composed many devotional songs, such as “Maiya Mori Main Na Jaoon Phooler-Govardhan…”

Sahitya Lahari: There is doubt about the authenticity of Sahitya Lahari. All verses of Sahitya Lahari use poetic titles like Sur, Surdas, Suraj, etc., leading to the belief that this work is by the famous poet Surdas. In one verse, the poet introduces himself by giving his extensive lineage. He identifies himself as Surajchandra. He mentions Chandbardai among his ancestors. The subject matter, perspective, and language style of ‘Sahitya Lahari’ make this work even more questionable. Its composition cannot be dated before the 18th century. The subject matter of ‘Sahitya Lahari’ is the characteristics and examples of heroines, figures of speech, or some other poetic element. It holds no significance either from the perspective of characteristics and examples, or from the perspective of language style and poetic art.

Shri Krishna said to Yashoda, “Mother! I haven’t eaten butter. All these friends are bent on making me laugh; they put it in my mouth. Just look! The utensils were hung high on the railing. I ask you, how did I get them with my tiny hands?” Saying this, Mohan wiped the yogurt from his mouth and cleverly hid the bowl full of butter behind him. Mother Yashoda, listening to her son, put down her stick, smiled, and embraced Shri Krishna. Surdas says that the Lord captivated his mother’s heart with the joy of his childhood playfulness. In this childish play and his fear of her, he demonstrated his devotion. The joy that Mother Yashoda experienced from Shri Krishna’s childhood playfulness was unmatched even by Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma.
